Gravy Cup 2007 11/22

My recollection is that this event was started at the behest of Fuegote and a few other members of the LCFC. For those not familiar with that acronym, Loud Crowd FC was a joint venture between the Loyalists and the RCB to put together a 4th division team to get out, have fun and “lose a little weight”. With the help of IBIK (AKA Jeremy Horton), Peter Mellor, and sporting substantially more enthusiasm than talent, we resolved to try to make a team of it. Those who made it past the training sessions were rewarded with great comraderie, and even the occasional win. The Gravy Cup actually predates the inaugural season for LCFC as an attempt to feel connected to the friends we all made that first season at RES, as well as providing a great interruption from couch-potato American football rituals associated with Thanksgiving. The first year, we were surprised about the number of people who came out. The second year, with the assistance of the lovely Laura, who came through with some RSL swag and mini muffins, we tried to make a go of turning at least part of the days activities toward thinking of others, by asking people to bring in canned food to be donated to the Utah Food Bank. My truck bed was quite full after the event, and it was donated on behalf of the Gravy Cup and RSL Supporters Alliance…There are some outstanding photos of this event which I’d like to share, credit for the photos goes to Julia

Tomorrow will be the third Gravy Cup of many to come. Perhaps one day we’ll have to actually hold a tournament to showcase some of the talent in SLC, but I hope the anyone’s welcome spirit of the Gravy Cup will continue for years to come…hopefully long past when I hang up the boots for good.

I hope you all come out and enjoy the day.
