The Fog of Football 8/7

I know it’s only tuesday, but facing a bye week, I’m already feeling a little football deprived. I just got through watching the youth soccer roundup on FSC, learned from Truefaith.com that the Kieron Dyer trade was quashed by Ashley’s last minute 2 million pound fee hike, read the news that Ellinger is officially hasta, I learned that RSL has opted not to sign French national Tony Versailles; but none of that seems to help the overwhelming sense that SOMETHING big is happening and I’m missing it.

In truth, I always expected Ellinger to quit or get fired before next year, but the timing of the resignation makes me wonder. Knowing the organization, I can’t imagine that it’s good news. After all, the only way that Checketts could satisfy E’s contract was to promote him so he could fire him. But why now after RSL is finally starting to show signs of promise again? Oh sure, they’re still not a decent team, but at least there are a couple of players who are showing some quality. The decision can’t be on the back of some internal Kreis-Ellinger rift, they’ve always been cosy as clams…so what precipitated the decision? It’s possible E has landed an offer where he won’t be a pariah, but surely there’d have been some news of it. Then there’s always the possibility that RSL has actually been actively pursuing a GM and have found the right candidate, making Ellinger’s position untenable…but who am I kidding. Where are you on this one Gaby?

So from all appearances, Kreis is going to opt to sign the 3 Argentinians, striker Edgar Espindola, midfielder Javier Morales and defender Matias Mantilla. Everybody I’ve spoken too who has actually seen them play has had the same reaction…meh: Good players but nothing that sparkles. I have yet to find time to get down to the Xango field to watch them practice, and from all accounts, they’ve started clamping down on who they let witness practices. Perhaps they’ll spend some time practicing in SLC closer to the game and I’ll have an opportunity to see these guys for myself. Seeing how they play might give us some insight into what this offense is ostensibly supposed to look like.

11 days and counting until we either piss on the fire or piss up a rope…I’ll keep you posted.
